Research + Innovation at ARX Institute
At the American Institute for Resilient Infrastructure and Extreme Events (ARX Institute), our research agenda is centered on strengthening the resilience of critical infrastructure to extreme natural hazards. Guided by collaboration with federal agencies, academic institutions, and international partners, we focus on applied science and engineering solutions that address the unique challenges faced by both North America and developing countries. Our strategic areas of innovation support informed decision-making and long-term risk reduction across infrastructure systems.
Resilient Infrastructure Systems
We develop and apply advanced tools for analyzing, evaluating and improving the performance and resilience of infrastructure systems under extreme natural hazards, including earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, and landslides. Our focus includes critical facilities such as bridges, ports, railways, and pipelines.
Disaster Risk Assessment and Mitigation
This area involves integrated risk modeling, geospatial analysis, and scenario-based simulations to assess hazard exposure and design mitigation strategies. We support public and private stakeholders in reducing vulnerabilities across urban and rural settings, especially in North America and developing regions.
Innovative Materials and Monitoring Technologies
We explore new materials and smart technologies for infrastructure monitoring and adaptation. This includes performance-based materials, early-warning systems, and sensor networks aimed at improving the life-cycle performance and disaster response of critical assets.
